We have renamed PSHCE, Life Skills. This has enabled children to understand that what they are learning is useful in every area of their life at Meadowside and beyond. We value Life Skills as essential part of life at Meadowside and assess the children’s progress in the autumn, spring and summer each academic year. It is reported to parents and carers in end of year reports.
There are many aspects of Life Skills that we explore at Meadowside and the best way to think of it is as a ‘school bag’. The RSHE (Relationship Sex Health Education) section is the sandwich. You can read our policy below but as you can see, Sex Education only forms a small part of this at primary school.
We use assemblies, Life Skills lessons, special events, visitors and more to teach all the aspects that appear in the Personal Development School Bag.

At Meadowside, we assess the children in Life Skills on the following objectives across all year groups:
- Shows an understanding of what is right and wrong
- Knows key elements of keeping fit, healthy and safe
- Appreciates the needs and views of others
- Confident to share their opinions
- Participates well in school life and shows an awareness of belonging to different groups and communities
We use the CORAM scheme to support our learning in Life Skills, resources from Gloucestershire Healthy Living, as well as the Gloucester School’s Partnership Online Safety lessons, called Digital Futures.
